EmpowerHer: A Pioneering European Programme for the Empowerment of Women after Breast Cancer

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, we present the European programme EmpowerHer, an international initiative in which Olympiacos S.F.P. actively participates. The aim of the project is to provide meaningful support and empowerment to women who are undergoing treatment or have completed their journey with breast cancer.

What is the EmpowerHer programme?

EmpowerHer is an innovative European project coordinated by the University of Valencia – Department of Physiotherapy. It is a multidisciplinary partnership that brings together universities, technology organisations, and healthcare professionals — oncologists, nutritionists, psychologists — with a common goal: to create a digital and community-based support framework.

The programme focuses on three key pillars:

Specialised Exercise: Tailored to the needs of patients.

Education: Providing reliable information on health and wellbeing.

Social Connection: Creating a community that promotes mutual support.

Participation in the Research: Your voice matters

At the current stage of the project, an important research study is being conducted through a questionnaire. We invite women who are currently undergoing treatment or have completed their treatments to share their experience.

Why participate? Recording your real needs will help develop tools that can meaningfully improve the quality of life of women across Europe.

Olympiacos S.F.P. participated in the transnational meeting of the EmpowerHer project in Eindhoven, the Netherlands

Olympiacos S.F.P., as a proud partner of the European project EmpowerHer, actively participated in the Transnational Project Meeting held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, on 16-17 October 2025, hosted by Cluster Sports & Technology.

The meeting brought together all project partners with the aim of assessing the progress of EmpowerHer, sharing experiences from previous phases, and planning the next steps of the initiative.

The sessions began on 16 October with an expert meeting, during which partners exchanged feedback and suggestions regarding the EmpowerHer Guidelines, Best Practices, and Participant Surveys. This was followed by a session focused on motivating and engaging women to participate in physical activity and well-being programmes. Discussions covered topics such as participant recruitment, survey organisation, and data analysis, ensuring the project’s results have a meaningful and measurable impact.

The second day, 17 October, focused on the practical implementation of project activities. Partners presented the progress of the Work Packages, with particular emphasis on the preparation of the Facilitators Training Course, which will take place in Greece in the summer of 2026. Olympiacos S.F.P. will have the honour of hosting professionals from across Europe, who will be trained to implement the project’s actions at both local and European levels.

The meeting took place in October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month, giving special significance to the EmpowerHer initiative. Olympiacos S.F.P. remains firmly committed to the empowerment of women and to fostering resilience and self-confidence, while simultaneously promoting prevention, awareness, and social solidarity through sport and collective action.

EmpowerHer is a pan-European initiative co-funded by the Erasmus+ Sport programme. The project is implemented by universities, research centres, companies, and organisations across Europe, promoting inclusive, equitable, and evidence-based practices.

Olympiacos S.F.P. Stands by Breast Cancer Survivors through the EmpowerHer Initiative

As part of the European project EmpowerHer, Olympiacos S.F.P. organized a special event on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, dedicated to supporting recovery and improving quality of life after breast cancer treatment.

A key national partner and scientific advisor to the project in Greece is the REA Maternity Hospital, which brings valuable expertise in the care and support of women recovering from breast cancer.

The event focused on topics related to life after treatment, the promotion of physical activity, and the need for emotional and social empowerment. Through an interactive discussion format, various challenges and opportunities were highlighted, reflecting the complexity of transitioning into a balanced and active post-treatment lifestyle.

Special emphasis was placed on the next steps in collaboration with REA Maternity Hospital, aiming to link EmpowerHer with the broader healthcare system and strengthen survivorship care through integrated, multidisciplinary services.

As part of the event, participants were also introduced to a pilot version of the EmpowerHer digital app, currently in development. The app is designed to offer accessible guidance, personalized support, and tools for empowerment during the recovery journey, leveraging user-friendly technology to bridge gaps in care.

This activity is part of EmpowerHer’s broader strategy for the co-creation of rehabilitation tools and services, grounded in the real needs and lived experiences of the target group, and aiming to create sustainable, user-informed solutions across Europe.

EmpowerHer is implemented by six organizations from Spain, Greece, Poland, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Belgium, with co-funding from the European Union’s Erasmus+ Sport programme. The EmpowerHer app and training programme are expected to enter the pilot phase in 2026, placing innovation and empathy at the heart of modern survivorship care.

Strengthening Collaboration and Strategic Coordination of EmpowerHer Program Partners

On April 24, the regular online meeting of the partners of the EmpowerHer European project was held. Funded by the Erasmus+ programme, EmpowerHer aims to support and empower women who have survived breast cancer, through physical activity and social support.

During the meeting—where Olympiacos S.F.P. actively participated—key organizational and technical issues were discussed in preparation for the next project phase:

·       The completion of training material for facilitators (Deliverable 4.1), which will be used in the pilot implementation of the programme.

  • Planning of the upcoming in-person meeting in Poznań, Poland, focusing on organizing tasks by thematic area (Work Packages).
  • Progress on the Data Protection Impact Assessment, ensuring secure handling of personal data through the EmpowerHerApp.
  • Scheduling the pilot data collection process, expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
  • Analysis of qualitative feedback from focus groups, aiming to enhance the relevance and usability of the project’s digital tools.

Olympiacos S.F.P.’s contribution once again confirms its strong commitment to promoting social responsibility and gender equality through sport, while helping disseminate the project’s core values within Greek and European society.

EmpowerHer moves steadily forward, combining innovation, technology, and human care to provide meaningful support to breast cancer survivors as they open a new chapter in life.
